Wound Components is the generic name given to the family of components made up of a ‘core’ around which ‘turns’ or ‘windings’ of insulated wire are wrapped.
The electrical characteristics of the wound components produced depends primarily upon the size, material and shape of the core, the number of turns of wire, the space between the windings and the type of wire used.
Their main use is to either 'step up' or 'step down' voltage from an AC supply.
Wound Components are available in many forms including Transformers, Inductors, Chokes and Solenoids.
