Application Specific Integrated Circuit

As its name might suggest, an ASIC is a type of semiconductor designed to be used for a specific processing purpose within an electronic circuit. Unlike generic Microprocessors or CPU's they tend to be product or family specific, and are often costly to design and relatively expensive to manufacture.
