Passives

Passive components are widely used in most electronic designs. Unlike Active components, passives do not amplify or switch signals and also do not need power to be applied to them to make them work.

Passive components can be used together in 'groups' either in series or in parallel to produce different characteristics. Typical types of passive components include resistors and capacitors.

Typically, in most electronic assemblies there a high number of passive components. They can take up a lot of space or real estate on the printed circuit board. As a result, passive manufacturers produce a wide range of forms and package sizes. These include leaded parts suitable for conventional or PTH assembly and a vast range of Surface Mount devices (SMD), the most common sizes ranging in rectangular format from 0201, 0402, 0603,0805 and 1206 packages.

In addition, as a result of new technologies particularly in the telecom sector (e.g. wireless devices) smaller form factors such as integrated passive devices (IPDs) have been developed.
