Logistics

Ever since the end of the second world war, international trade has accelerated and become more the normal 'modus operandi' for many manufacturing companies . As a result a freight forwarding industry has grown up to support this growing trade.

A freight forwarder organises the safe, efficient movement of goods on behalf of an exporter or importer, sometimes including dealing with packing and storage.

Freight forwarders are often seen as the travel agents of international trading. If you have a consignment of goods you need to move internationally, a forwarder will identify, organise the best routes, modes of transport and specific carriers for you.

Using a forwarder can cut your costs. Because they arrange the transport of a large number of consignments, they can consolidate loads to keep freight charges down for individual traders.

Freight forwarders typically offer a range of value added services including:

  • Supporting the customs clearance process - forwarders can complete customs paperwork on your behalf, and pay any taxes or duties owed
  • Managing documentation issues - e.g. Bills of Lading, or any documents required by banks before payment is released
  • Supplying insurance services
