Actives

Two main types of component are used in electronic circuits: passives (e.g. resistors and capacitors) and actives. The main differences between active and passive components are that actives need to be powered in some way to make them operate, and they have gain or directionality. Active components can also be used to amplify signals. In contrast, passive components do not have any of these characteristics.
